Borderlands 2 Announced!

We've finally announced Borderlands 2. Very exciting around the office. We're all stoked big time on this project, and I've been blown away with the progress made in the last year and a half. Lots of talented folks all coming together under a unified vision sure makes game development a whole lot easier.

Here's the Game Informer cover that should be on shelves in a couple weeks.

Star Raiders

Been a long while since my last post. I did these Star Raiders pieces for Incinerator Studios. Was fun to work with Jeff Garstecki again.

The Carrier and Battle Cruiser pieces are paintovers of Jeff's ship design blockouts. He needed surface color/details worked out.

The Rapture is a second ship design based loosely on the Jasper attack craft.

The weapon pieces are modules that slide into the player's weapons bay. They represent your secondary fire mode.

Many thanks to the Pixel Yard for giving me the opportunity to teach a workshop today. This was my first official foray into teaching, and I must say, it was both exhilarating and terrifying. The workshop revolved around creating a grayscale image within Photoshop. Starting with a blank canvas and working through the drudgery of finding forms while also talking myself through it was pretty intense. I didn't relax until things started to fall into place. Jason Rowells, Brian Johnson, and Eddie Maristela run a tight program over there, and I am honored to have taught with them.

I spent the last few days updating my website. Lots of new work on here, plus a brand spankin new design. Thanks to all those who helped with the critiques to get it where it is.

Here are just some quick sketches. Take about 15 minutes. I've started doing these for lay-ins to build up an image. You can tell if an image will work or not just in this simplified, blocked in state.

Here are some environment renders for a swamp level in the game. We needed it to look alien, worn down, and post-apocalyptic.

We started moving away from the western theme and got a little more techie. Still keeping the feeling a bit worn down and rusty. I didn't know how crazy to get on the gear, so these explorations go from laid back to comical proportions.

We started thinking about a cowboy space western, maybe influenced by Serenity/Firefly.

Some work from an internal IP that got canned. So it goes... These first few were just explorative paints. We had no idea what style, tech, etc.

These are a couple stadiums for the main characters. One is McQueen's home track, the other Mater's. Probably the two most fun things to work on in the game.

Eh, it's been awhile. Here's a project that's been worked on since last year and is finally shipping as I write this.

These first few images are of some random tracks from the game. One is a Baja type course and the other a Swiss Alps. The little factory is a cutscene of cars being turned into stormtrooperesque characters. Game was pretty fun to work on. Got to get a little more realistic than the Nicktoons stuff and had a great IP to play with.

Finally got a new website going. This one should be a lot easier to update. 3 Pages in all! Also, here's some work from a discontinued project.

Spongebob Environments

The environments were pretty interesting in Spongebob. Each level is based on a certain property, so there were quite a few different styles going on. A lot of my time near the end was spent doing paintovers of barebones levels to help the environment guys. All said, we got the game done in a crazy short dev cycle.

Spongebob is finally on store shelves. I jumped right into this project after Concrete closed its doors. It's surprising how things turn out. Here are some characters from the game and their respective gadgets.

Here are some environment pieces done for an unreleased game at THQ's former Concrete Games. We had a good team going but things just didn't pan out. What can be said is lots of great connections were made and the continued relationships of those who worked there attest to the mutual respect we had for each other.
